Beyond the Dust: Take Recognition Beyond Diwali Cleaning

Fireworks on a blurred background

Diwali is just round the corner and Diwali Cleaning is going on in a big way. All the stuff forgotten and tucked away and in the back of the cupboards and drawers, under the bed and the attic will come out, be dusted and put back again.

Has it ever happened to you that the award you received was so tacky and badly made that you didn’t even feel like displaying it. No space for it at home and no space on your limited office desk? Let’s be honest; if the awards only get a chance to shine during Diwali cleaning, something’s not quite right. Real recognition should be front and center, not pushed away to the dusty depths of your storage. Sure, some people have worked hard to earn those pats on the back, but do the awards you give out do justice to their efforts?

Of course, everyone loves to be recognised or appreciated, but the real exponential effect comes when they love the award they have received and want to display it proudly. In a world where employee recognition is increasingly seen as the cornerstone of increasing productivity and motivation, it’s disheartening to see how many awards and certificates end up tucked away in attics and cupboards.

Let’s discuss how to make sure your recognition is more than just something taken out for seasonal cleaning, but something that’s truly loved and cherished by those who receive it.

Problem: There are two main reasons why awards end up in cupboards or drawers

1. Poor quality of the award:

Awards which are tacky and untidy in finish, with glue marks showing, smudged engraving, metal plate wearing off or parts falling off.

2. Non personalised awards that lack an emotional connect:

these represent a classic case of superficial recognition, the kind of recognition given in a thoughtless, almost autopilot way –  like a generic star award or a boring plaque. There’s hardly any personal touch, and it makes you wonder if anyone really put any thought into it.

Solution: Creating Recognition That Is Loved

The real return on your money and building a great culture will be when the awards are seen, not just by the person who receives it, but also their family and friends.

To make your awards display-worthy and showcased proudly, here’s the key elements one needs to consider:

First and foremost, take a Personal Test. When you are selecting the award for a ceremony, within the constraints of the budget, ask yourself “Would I love to receive this award? Would I love to show it to others?’ If the answer to that is Yes, then consider the following aspects –

1. Personal Connection:

Award that connects with the audience and reminds them of what they connect most about themselves. Imagine receiving a regular star award vs receiving Carve Your Own Destiny Award. Which one are you more likely to keep?

2. How is the award being given?

The way the award is given is as special as the award itself. Maybe it was a great ceremony or even few people came together and celebrated but everyone had something beautiful to say about the person and that makes it a memorable experience. As we often say, recognition and appreciation is all about making people feel they matter.

3. Quality and Aesthetics:

A well-crafted and visually appealing award with a distinctive design is more likely to be displayed. High-quality materials and an aesthetically pleasing design make the award a source of pride.

4. Customization:

Customize the award to reflect the recipient’s name, achievement, and any other relevant details. Handwritten notes, custom-made awards, or awards that reflect the recipient’s achievements can make recognition truly special. You can also Incorporate symbols, images, or design elements that carry deep meaning related to the recipient’s accomplishments. A symbolically significant award has a story to tell and holds emotional value.

5. Durability:

Make sure the award is built to last. A sturdy award that will not tarnish, rust or discolour with time will be a long-term reminder of achievement. It’s not just for today; it’s for the years to come. It’s a good question to ask the supplier about the durability of the award for some materials are short lived or tough to maintain. This is the real reason why Silver awards are on a decline. They are expensive but in just a few weeks or months they start to tarnish.

6. Go Small:

When it comes to awards, everyone loves to receive and even present a big award. But big need not always mean better. Think space constraints. Smaller and sleeker awards are more likely to make it on to desks and showcases.
