Is your Reward Program Recognising Effort?

There are a few award categories which are easy to decide and they get included in most Reward programs. say,

  • Star Sales Performer of the Year
  • Best Customer Service
  • Employee of the Month

However think for a moment, What we are really recognizing is only the final result.

But what about people who are making huge efforts… who have not reached the top yet… but they have improved leaps and bounds.

How would they feel sitting in the audience when nobody is even acknowledging their efforts?

It’s like saying come to the top and then we will talk…. or else… keep struggling…

Don’t get me wrong I am not in favour of promoting average performance & sidelining excellence. Far from it.

The only point I am trying to make is don’t forget about people who are moving towards excellence but have not reached there yet.

Yes, I know people only remember number 1 & number 2 but we must not forget that running a successful business is not about competition.

Everyone’s contribution counts. Every employee makes a difference to how the business shapes up on a daily basis.

The reason why many companies ensure that their reward program recognizes effort. They ensure that a larger number of people get recognized and everyone gets a fair chance.

Let’s run some numbers.

If you have a team of 300 customer service people and you have to choose a winner. Doing a rough estimate we know that 200 people have already thought in their mind that this award is not for me.

Why should I even try?

So in effect, before your reward program starts you have already reduced your reach to 20% of the workforce and as things progress this will dwindle down to 10% and even 5% in many circumstances.

Don’t you agree that a reward program which is inspiring and motivating only 10% of the workforce is not the most efficient way to proceed?

Here is a list of Awards which are great when it comes to recognizing efforts…

You can customize them for your organization and include in your reward program.

I have included Award Wording examples to go with the Award Name as well but for sure they need to be customized to your specific reward program and line of work.
